Federal BOP Custody Scope
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is the sentenced-prisoner route. A federal conviction and designation normally place the person at a BOP institution, which may be anywhere in the national system. The official directory identifies no BOP prison in Montgomery County. A county arrest, a federal pretrial detention, and a later BOP commitment are separate episodes even when they concern the same case.
A BOP locator entry marked Released with a past date answers one narrow question: the person is no longer in BOP custody for that recorded episode. It does not show whether federal supervised release began, ICE assumed custody, a state or local warrant was executed, or a later case caused new detention. The federal judgment and later orders explain the sentence and supervision. A receiving agency must confirm any later custody.
Confirm a Federal BOP Release
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal records from 1982 forward. Search by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known, or use the name fields and offered demographic refinements. Results can display name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status. Match more than the name before relying on a result. Pre-1982 records require the National Archives route.
The official BOP search interface is the matched public source for a federal released-status check.
The locator’s status and date apply to BOP custody only, so any later supervision or other agency custody needs a separate check.
- Search by BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number whenever one is known.
- Otherwise use the name fields and offered demographic refinements.
- Match the register number, age, sex, and other displayed details to the correct person.
- Read the release date together with the location or status, including Released or Unknown.
- Check the federal docket and any receiving agency before describing the broader status.
The BOP result covers federal prison custody only. Use a BOP record for documentary confirmation and the federal judgment for the sentence or supervised-release terms.
BOP Release Processing Details
A past date paired with Released is historical BOP confirmation. A future date is projected and can change. “Unknown” means the term or release date has not been determined. The locator cannot identify every pretrial movement because the U.S. Marshals Service houses federal pretrial prisoners across federal, state, local, and private facilities. USMS owns no detention facilities and offers no equivalent public released-person locator.
The sentencing court’s projected date and the institution’s actual release event can differ. A future locator date may change, and another agency can assume custody afterward. Use the BOP result for the federal prison episode, then read the federal docket and query any receiving authority. Montgomery County transport practices do not govern a BOP release.
BOP Release Record Requests
A federal records request should go to the Bureau of Prisons or the custodian named by the official federal channel, not to DOCR. Identify the person by register number, full name, birth details, institution, and time period. Ask narrowly for the release date, release status, institution, and releasable record that confirms the end of the BOP episode.
For the legal basis, obtain the judgment and later orders from the federal court docket. For pretrial federal movement, the U.S. Marshals Service may hold the responsive record. A Montgomery County PIA request is relevant only if there was also a separate county detention event.
Keep the request tied to the correct federal stage. The court owns the judgment and sentence-modification orders. USMS may hold pretrial transport or detention records. BOP holds the institutional record after designation. Naming the register number, institution, and date range helps prevent a response about the wrong person or episode.
- Release authority
- The court, sentence event, or agency action that permits the custody episode to end.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take or continue custody.
- Transfer
- A move to another custodian, not a return to the community.
BOP Locator Field Meanings
The register number is the strongest identifier in a BOP result. The release-date field must be read with the location or status text. A past date and Released can establish the end of that BOP episode. A projected date for a current prisoner is not a promise because sentence credits, court action, disciplinary matters, and other legal events may alter it. The federal docket remains the legal source for the sentence and supervised-release term.
Release logistics and property procedures depend on the specific BOP institution. Montgomery County’s MCDC vouchers and property deadlines do not apply to federal prison release. Use the institution named in the locator and official BOP contacts for property or release-certificate questions. Use the federal docket for the court-ordered term and supervised-release conditions.
Montgomery to Federal Handoffs
A Montgomery County record may show a federal warrant, writ, or pickup before BOP appears anywhere in the chain. County Inmate Records can identify the local departure and the named receiving authority. That record does not establish a BOP commitment. Before sentencing, USMS commonly manages detention and transport while using federal, state, local, or private facilities. The federal docket identifies the court event behind that movement.
An immigration detainer is a different lead. Montgomery County Code §2-160 defines it as a civil administrative request involving notice or continued custody and sets local rules and exceptions. A civil detainer is not automatically a judicial warrant. If the county record points to ICE, use the immigration system rather than BOP. If it points to USMS, follow the federal criminal docket and known holding custodian until sentencing and BOP designation occur.
BOP Records and Contact
No BOP institution or local BOP release office in Montgomery County was identified in the official directory. Use the locator first, then the individual institution or BOP records route shown by official federal sources. For pretrial federal movements, contact the U.S. Marshals District of Maryland or inspect the federal docket. Do not route a federal release-record request to Montgomery County DOCR unless the person also had a distinct county custody episode.

When precision matters, pair the BOP answer with the Montgomery County released inmate search and records path. That process distinguishes a county release from state, federal, immigration, or community-corrections status.
Pre-1982 and Pretrial Federal Records
The public BOP locator begins with federal prison records from 1982 forward. A federal sentence or release before that coverage period may require the National Archives route described by BOP. Search the archive using the name, court, institution, dates, and any federal identification number that survives in the judgment or older paperwork. Do not treat a blank modern locator result as proof that no older federal record exists.
Pretrial federal custody follows a different path. USMS owns no detention facilities and places federal pretrial prisoners in federal, state, local, and private facilities. No public USMS name locator comparable to the BOP search was found. The federal docket identifies warrants, detention orders, plea and sentencing events. The holding facility or a narrowly framed USMS FOIA request can address the physical movement.
After sentencing and designation, the BOP register number becomes the strongest bridge between the locator and the court case. Match the register number, age, sex, race, institution or status, and dates instead of relying on a common name. Preserve the official result as a lead. Obtain the underlying BOP record and federal judgment if the precise date, release basis, or supervision term matters.
The three locator date states must remain distinct. A past date paired with Released records the end of BOP custody. A future date is projected and may change. Unknown means the release date or term is not determined in the locator. None of those labels supplies the full federal judgment, a probation officer’s instructions, or the status of another agency.
A person can also be absent from BOP custody while still involved in a federal criminal case. Bond, a detention order, and pretrial placement belong to the court and USMS stage. Do not label those outcomes as a BOP release unless an actual BOP institutional episode ended.
If the person first left DOCR on a federal warrant, retain the county transfer record as its own event. It can identify the pickup time and receiving authority. The docket and USMS route then explain pretrial custody. BOP controls only after commitment. This ordered chain prevents a county transfer, a USMS movement, and a later BOP release from being collapsed into one vague event.
For durable proof, request the federal custodian’s releasable institutional record. A locator screenshot is helpful evidence of what the public system displayed on a given date, but the BOP record and court judgment carry the fuller context.
